What are horse walkers actually for?

The big spinny turbine things you put your horse in ... http://www.google.co.uk/imgres ? imgurl=ht ...

Like I get that they're to make your horse walk .. duh: P but I mean why do you want to do that? And if you wanted it to then can't you just lunge it, ride it or walk it inhand? There's one at my yard but it only gets used once in a blue moon and I was wondering what is the actual point of them? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Excuse my ignorance:)
You will see a lot of race horse trainers use them. To put the horses on to cool them out so the next horse can get exercised.

-Cool Horses down

-Excercise horses that should be getting light work

-Excercise horse

A few more things but can't thnk of right now.
For exercise, but they can also help to cool down.

As said, commonly they are used in racing yards, horses are placed on the walker to warm up while another lot are taken out to be exercised, again horses are also put on to cool down after.

Walkers are also good for horses that just require light exercise, say if a horse is recovering from an injury or is unfit.

Also, there are time during the winter when the ground can be too hard to ride, so the walker can be helpful to allow the horse to stretch their legs, or when there may be a lack of turnout.
I do believe that all of the race trainers have them, they take out 4 or 5 horses at one time put them on it and let them walk to warm them up before the start working them and they also use them to cool the horses off.

My daughters train horses and one of them has a walker to put her fresh horses on while she works others.
I asked the same question at a farm once and they replyed that they for when horses need trained to walk and when they can 't walk them cause they busy walking others they put a horse in there while walking 1 because they can''t walk 2 at the same time and they keep the weight off
some people has lots of horses and they all need exercise so they exercise them using it. i think you should only use it at most to warm up and cool down a horse, if you need it for full exercise, you shouldn't have that much horses, you don't have enough time.
If you have a place where your horse is cooped up in a stall, you can stick one in one of those and have it stretch its legs. Also, they use them as a way to cool down horses.
they are to give horses excersise if their owners are unable to ride them and they are used for cooling them down after excersise as it's dangerous to put them straight away after extreme excersise eg xcountry/racing/schooling ect.
They are to exercise your horse when you don't have time to lunge, ride or walk in hand. They also regulate speed of gait too.
Some people who own a lot of horses dont have time to individually walk each horse by riding or lunging so they will use that with several horses to get the excerise they need.
It's a good way to exercise or warm up multiple horses and it saves time if you're busy (:
Walking horses.
the answer is in the question ... they are to walk horses !!!.... to give it exercise
No problem. First time I came across one was when I went on to a huge yard to work! They are useful for horses who need walking exercise before work and after work they are good for warming the horse up and easing stiffness, cooling down - saving time from hand walking. Horses that need walking while recovering from injury who need to be walking only.

Horses on our yard used to go on the walkers for an hour or so while we mucked out the stables. They were then brought in, groomed, tacked up and worked. They were then untacked, washed down and walked until they were dry and relaxed and then groomed again, rugged up and put to bed.

They are also useful for when the ground is not good for exercising.

Horses do need to be watched. We did have some problems when horses were tied to walk round as some did not like it and would pull on the machines, either to stop, or once we had one horse pulling and they were all having to canter ! I like the newer models where a horse is put into its own cage and is untied. The gate at the back then encourages them forward.
we have the other type at my barn - http://www.hotwalkers.com/images/4_horse ...
