treating the runs with probiotics and pepto, they seem to be helping, what's the deal with the drool? He's never done this before.
Im not sure how old your stud is, but I had a 31 year old mare. We saved her from a careless owner when she was 27. We fed her equine senior feed up until her death. She slobbered a lot while eating because at that age a horse doesn't have much if any teeth left. Their body is producing more saliva to help with the mechanical breakdown of the feed. I would get it checked out, but chances are it's nothing to worry about.
he's 21 and it's off to the vet in the morning.

I'm not saying 'this is what your Horse may have, though I would most certainly call your Vet very soon. Salmonella affects humans, horses, most mammals, and birds. It can cause debilitating - and even deadly- -diarrhea. Salmonella bacteria can affect both foals and adults, and they spread easily by horse-to-horse contact and by fomites (shared tools, water buckets, hands, etc., on which bacteria can "hitch a ride" to the next victim). Seemingly well horses can harbor the bacteria, and ...
Please go to this site, and find out more. It may have been a poison's plant in your pasture, or simple as having his molars treated, and floated. Though, I wouldn't waste time. I lost my Mare after four months of simple runs, with no signs of colic. So, please get a Vet soon!
What do you mean by older??? 16ish? 25ish?? Potomic feaver can make them have chronic runs and if they have that they will die pretty quick from dehydration.
Please let us know what he has when you find out and what you did or did not do to help him.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com If there is a lot of clover in your hay it will have a real sweetish smell.
Is he eating any clover? Clover can cause what is called "slobbers" where the horse drools excessively and it can sometimes be foamy. Has he recently had a diet change? That could cause the runs. And, as always, when in doubt, call your vet.
Ditto what Brett said. If he's not turned out, or is turned out in a "dry lot" ; check your hay bales.
