Gelding Questions ... (20 characters: l )....?

I just need opinions on when the best age is for gelding, I know to do it either soon here in the fall or wait 'till spring but what age?

My colt is 1yr 4mths and mostly dropped (one is for sure dropped but the other can't be seen but you can feel it when he is relaxed) I talked to the vet that will probably end up doing the procedure and she said that right now is the perfect age to do it but my BO is trying to convince me to wait until he's 2 (so like waiting for a year) and her reasoning is that they waited until their young gelding was 2 1/2 to geld and b/c when they got their mini stud gelded, the women who did it only did half the job b/c he wasn't fully dropped and now he is a mean little bugger and only 'half' there (anytime anyone goes near, he tries to bite XD)

So anyway, what age do you think is best to geld?
This is one of those questions that may not have "the" right answer for every horse, owner, situation. It used to be that people would wait to geld , but there has recently been information that if you geld sooner you may end up with a taller horse. Just the opposite of earlier trends. The logic behind this is the male hormones present in uncut stallions will actually impede growth and as a result a smaller horse. There is also to be considered when a stud colt is 'left' too long he may retain stallion behaviors that are undesirable to the everyday horse owner. I had my stud colts cut between six months and one year. So like I said there is no one absolutely correct answer. You should discuss this with you vet and of course the most important fact is if your colt has dropped both testicles.
You can geld any time from when they drop both testicles - usually the youngest would be 6 months. Personally I would have your colt gelded now, if you leave them then he may well develop stallion tendancies. The mini you're describing is a rig - he has only had one testicle removed so is basically a stallion in behaviour and abilities . Your colt sounds like he would be fine to do now.
We usually do ours a month after we wean them. I would suggest that you NOT wait until he is 2. As his hormones will start to kick in and he will be harder to handle so the sooner you get it done the better he will be.

And if you have a Vet that KNOWS how to deal with a Testi that isn't dropped you will be FINE. We have a vet where I live that is great with horse with one sucked up. So if we have a problem with one not dropping we take it to her and she can fix it 98% of the time.
As soon as both testicles have dropped. Get the vet to check when both of them have dropped and as soon as they have geld him. It isn 't really about age, it's when the vet can remove both parts. If you wait too long after both of them have dropped your colt may begin acting very coltish and could develop some bad habits-some colts don't become coltish but it isn 't worth the risk (not to mention the problems that could arise if he accidently gets in the field with a mare in season!)
