over the past three days, I have found 5 ticks on my horse, two on his jaw and three on his chest. I am there almost everyday and am now going to start checking him, but is there anything I can do to keep them off him?
thanks: D
wash him with tick and flea shampoo? im guessing you can use it on horses if you can use it on dogs. but i'd check first with you vet.
Also there's this little contraption thing that removes the ticks without leaving the head in the horse, which could then become infected.
but prevention is better than cure, as ticks can carry lime disease, and all sorts:/
I have never tried the baby oil, but I will have to sometime. It's too cold here now for ticks.
I use a powder or "dust" as it is called in the store that is specifically to help keep flies and ticks off. It works great. Just follow directions, and watch your skin for reactions. As long as I put it on every few days they don't get any ticks. It should be at any feed/tack store.

Don't forget to check his sheath area. That is a favorite of ticks. Like the other poster said put them in a bucket (water will also do) to kill them so they don't come back.
Good luck!
Well, my uncle used to own a horse ranch, and the horses would always get ticks in their ears, so he'd put wax in their ears. But, try putting a sheet on him (the summer kind ) that protects the skin from bugs. Maybe he's rubbing up agaisnt trees? I'd like to know more info about where he is kept.:)
line his mane, fetlocks, edges of legs, firelock roots, tail roots with baby oil helps keep the ticks off. When you pick them off put them in a jar of rubbing alchaol to kill them rather than spread them.
