What is the point of a Half pad?

Every time I go to a show, I notice that almost everyone is riding with a half pad, why is this? I know I should already know this, But I dont. And, they make the horse look ... better somehow, so should I get one? Please dont be rude!

Thanks In advance!
I agree with the above Poster.

I also Like the look of half pads, I think they look nice and people like them. If your horse doesnt need one, dont waste your money on one. But if you really want one and your horse doesnt need it, then just get a REALLY thin one and It'll look good and wont affect the fit of your saddle.
My horse has hard to fit withers, so I need to use a half pad so the saddle doesn't hurt her. Mine is about an an inch thick. They are used to raise the saddle up a bit and to decrease pressure that the saddle puts on the horse, so if the saddle doesn't fit as well as it should the horse won't be in pain. If your saddle fits well, you don't need one. They also make saddle pads with build in half pads. I'm not sure where to buy them - my friend has one - but that is another option. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

If I was you, I would talk to your trainer and have him/her determine if they think your saddle fits your horse well or not. If it doesn't, then you should invest in a half pad. If they think it doesn ' t fit well, then you should get one.
Right now I think they are a bit of a fad.

Really, they are meant to provide extra padding for the horse's back while not adding extra bulk under the leg. If a saddle fits well, a half pad isn't needed. They used to be only used with poorly fitting tack, but with the cute colors, and several professionals using them, they have become quite a hot item.

Do you need one? Only if your tack doesn't fit well. Do you want one to be 'in' on the fad? Up to you.
I have sold some ponies and horses to english jumping person. When I took horses up for her to try out, she had a child on one and the kid wasn't able to post correctly because the stirrups were hanging too far forward so she padded up the back of the saddle in order to bring the stirrup leathers back farther .
