I have a couple questions, i would like all to be answered.
1.Do you have to have shoes on your horse when barrel racing?
2.What all is needed when barrel racing? (Tack)
3. Can you use a hackamore, and if you can which is best (please include link.
4. What is the best tack to use when barrel racing? (Links please)
5 What tack do you use. (Links please)
1.You don't have to have shoes but sometimes they can help get more attraction.
2.Barrel bridle, Barrel saddle mainly.
3.You could but i wouldn't cause they might not respond as quickly.
1. Shoes are totally optional, and it depends on the quality of your horse's hooves. If they have a good thick wall then I wouldn't worry too much about shoes. Some people perfer them, and some don't.
2. Tack is also one of those optional deals. There's the obvious saddle and bridle, but some people also use a tie down, breast collar, and support boots on their horse.
3. Yes, you can use a hackmore. Any kind of show "legal" bit is allowed for barrel racing. Most people perfer to use hackmores or a curb bit with a strap on their horse, but I have also seen people use snaffle bits. It just all depends on how much control you have with the bit you are using.

If you are most comfortible in a beat up broken in trail saddle, then that's exactly what you should use. Barrel racing can be a pretty rugged sport, so your horse will be much happier in a worn out well fitting saddle than a brand new shiney stiff one. It isn't about looks, it's about utility.
5. I don't have a link, but I use a Weaver synthetic barrel saddle and bridle for barrel racing. This is also the same tack I use for trail riding. It's durable, waterproof, and easy to clean. The saddle is also very light weight, which is great because my horse is older and has a bit of arthoritis in her shoulder. It's still okay to ride her, but the lighter saddle makes a huge difference for her.
1.Do you have to have shoes on your horse when barrel racing? You don't "have" to. It's not a requirement. Some horses perform better with shoes, but not all.
2.What all is needed when barrel racing? (Tack) Basically, a saddle/bridle/pad. You might prefer, however, to have an actual barrel saddle (for proper positioning), a pad that provides the best fit, padding, and absorption of sweat for your horse, a breastcollar (to help keep the saddle in position), a bridle/bit that works well, a whip of some sort, and protective boots (for your horse).

4. What is the best tack to use when barrel racing? (Links please) Something that fits, provides good results, and works well for you and your horse. It's different for everyone.
5 What tack do you use. (Links please) I don't actually barrel race. I did it for fun as a (little bitty) kid, have some friends that do it, and watch it quite a bit, but I do WP/HMS/etc.
1.Do you have to have shoes on your horse when barrel racing?
- I have never used shoes, all my horses have good solid feet and I always think of them as extra weight to run with. The less weight the horse has while running the better and faster they will run.
2.What all is needed when barrel racing? (Tack)
-Barrel Saddle-I usually get them in a seat size smaller than my own as it really helps hold me in. My first barrel saddle was made by Stallion Tack (

-Bridle (obvious) with a bit that helps your horse turn better and rate the barrels ... you may need to try a couple different bits.
-Get a good pad that will support your horses back, impact gels, Tacky too, and Charmayne James SMX Air Ride pads I have found to work the best
--- You can usually find all of these pads used for a really decent price
-Tie-down (optional) Try your horse with one and without one and see if they run better with one.
Make sure that it is not too tight as that will hinder with your horses performance. You should be able to move their head up and down with ease but they should not be able to throw their nose in the air.
-Sport Boots and Bells are a must. I prefer Classic Equine Boots and bells. (
