Okay .. So my horse and I are getting into barrel racing. Yes, I know he's gaited. Yes, I know we won't go far. It's for fun.
I want to protect his legs and I don't know what brand or size of boots I should get him. He's a Tennesse Walker as I've said and 16H

I'm always on a budget for barrel racing, so I always use classic equine legacy boots (still a little spendy) but I like them even better than pro choice as they are actually designed to fit every part of the horses leg. They also have a little bit of a skid cup type thing that really protects and supports the legs around those tight turns. I will never go back to any other boot.
You can see them here;

http://i.ebayimg.com/01/! B2MkVIwBmk ~ $ (KG ... Notice the padding that helps to really support the legs. LOVE IT!
I also have used Pro Equine Boots
http://www.shopatron.com/products/catego ... They work well too for the price they don't offer quite as much support as classic equine. Personally I think they are just as good as Pro Choice boots though. I think Pro Choice boots are bought just for the name, as I have found boots that work just as well if not better for a much better price.
Or there are also Jack's Sport Boots. I have used them and they work pretty well for just low level barrel racing. I'm selling a pair in size large for $ 15 if you'd be interested (not trying to sell you on something lol )
Performer's Choice Boots are another good boot I just though of. They come in pretty much any color too. I have a few pairs of these as well.

I think you would need a size large for your horse. And theres no reason you can't do well in barrel racing just because he's gaited. I run a standard bred, Foxtrotter, and a Tennesse walker and they do 1D time ... granted just on a local level. I think you guys could do well. From the pictures it looks like you both enjoy it.
Just remember chin up and don't care what people say. You can do really well if you really want to.
PS Bell boots are a MUST! Go with no-turn bells as well.
I would HIGHLY recommend the SMB Elites, as they are contoured to the horses legs and fit snug and protect the leg very well. The size depends on the size of your horses cannon bone. They should have a measuring thing on the site for Professional Choice Boots. I would also recommend you invest in Bell Boots as well. Because your horse could easily over reach while turning and step on himself creating a literal bloody mess.
I personally prefer the Proffesional Choice Sport Medicine Boots (SMB's, SMB II's, SMB Elites) they can be a little pricey but you can usually find them used. They work well for not only support boots, but for protection as well

Its all I use. They dont twist and they dont rub
I agree with the Professionals Choice SMB boots. They hold up wonderfully, fit well, and are definitely worth the money. A 16hh horse would need a size Large.
