can anyone tell me a way to tell my mare to STOP trying to bit me

tanx in advance and no rude comments plz
Just give her a smack. If a horse bites another horse they get bitten back, or kicked.
Avoid giving treats, if you want to give a reward then add it to her feed but usually a pat will suffice in most cases.

When she bites, give her a smack immediately and say NO!

Laura: There is a difference between discipline and abuse, excessive hitting will make any horse sour, but a well deserved smack for bad behaviour will not, it's more about the shock than anything else and a lesson is learnt, they realise their behaviour is not acceptable.

Think about it this way, it's a quick slap for them or a nice chunk out of your arm.

Giving too many hand fed treats can result in greedy and disrespectful behaviour and the horse will just consider you a walking vending machine.

EDIT: It's through lack of discipline and instead spoiling horses that creates a dangerous animal. Again there is a huge difference between reprimanding bad behaviour and abuse.

Going into a stable and handing a horse a treat each time for no reason is a very bad idea altogether, if they think every time they see you that they get a treat, soon it will be all they will look for and in some cases they become aggressive.
I agree with Ron and Fox, stop hand feeding treats. She'll stop very quickly when she gets the idea that hands do not equal food. If she goes in, smack her on the muzzle. Another horse would bite her if she got in that close to her food and holler "no." It's appropriate behavior that can escalate into a nasty situation.

And laura, find another barn. You reprimand a horse when appropriate, such as biting or kicking unless you want to be killed by an animal that can take you out with their hooves. Seriously ... discipline does NOT equal abuse when timed properly and delivered properly. You just do it and then continue on with what you were doing like nothing happened. When this happens, I've never seen a horse get more agitated but they've learned you won't tolerate their crap. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

You reward more then discipline, I won't argue with that but you do not kill a horse with kindness when engaging in an activity that puts you or other humans in harm's way. You are not as physically big or strong as a horse, you won't hurt them but they will smash you into a pulp before you can even blink. I pray that you don't learn that the hard way.

And rewarding a bad behavior with a treat ENFORCES bad behavior.
Dont give her treats or feed by hand. When she tries to bite smack her nose, she wont feel it but will more than likely throw her head up cus she wont like it. after that scold her and let her know shes being a bad girl. if she keeps doing it stop giving her treats all together. she needs to learn. its no fun having a horse that bites!
I agree with LAF. only I would say slap her on the soft part of the muzzle as hard as you can, to it quickly and then act like you have no Idea of where it came from.
Well, there's no exact way to tell but she could just be getting frisky from the cold weather. I suggest you just keep scolding her, and (this has worked for me), give her a treat three different times a day, and if she acts up once, she only gets two, twice, one, thrice, none ... ect. Hope I helped!
Like the others said, stop giving her treats. I've always cuffed a horse pretty hard under the chin if they even try to bite, but the soft area between the nostrils is a good place to catch them too.
quit hand feeding her treats, quit completely if you give her a treat give it in the feed trough not by hand.
Dont feed her treats. Smack her in the nose if she tries to bite ... I know it sounds mean, but it is necessary.
don't scold her and don't smack her.

At my riding school there is a very bad horse there that always bites and kicks, so by hitting her is that really going to help ...? No!! You will just cause more tension.

The horse at my riding school came from a bad home and has only ever been hit so when she it hit, she bites and kicks the person and that gets both rider and horse no where.

she bites so you hit then she bites again so you hit again, it gets you no where!!

When you go see her take a treat (like a carrot or whatever she likes) and hand feed her it, then stroke/pat her neck.

And always reward her when she has been good.

@ Arburbula - I don't want to sound mean but i think i know what i am talking about since i get taught by people who have been and won gold at the Olympics.

As for being killed if i went into her stable then she bit me, if i hit her after wards and she kicked me then i think i would get killed.
