Ok, so about a month and a half ago i got two new mares, one of them is suuuper fuzzy and has ALL her winter fur, but the other one im starting to worry because she hasnt grown any yet. And it starting to snow were i live. I would ask her previous owner if she was blanketed all her life and that whay ... but she is a rescue horse so we dont know any of her history.
If i do end up blanketing her what are some good types of blankest to look for? New or used? What should i look for in the blanket?
Thank-you so much!
I would start to blanket your horses.
I start to blanket when it starts to be under 50 degrees
I live in RI and have been blanketing for a few weeks now, just to make sure they are warm and don '
t get that fuzzy because its unhealthy if they get worked everyday. Too shed them is also a pain in the neck!
But it's its snowing DEFIANTLY.
Anyways, I like weatherbeeta's, Defender pessoas, tough-1 (ive had the same blanket for 3 years so far from tough-1!)
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com What you should look for in a blanket is one with a hard shell if you want to turn your horse out in it, just so the water doesn't go through it. If you want to get a stable black make sure you have a turn out sheet to put over it so that it doesn't get wet! You can always have the hard shelled blanket in the stall, its saves you money if you just get a waterproof meduimweight.
Some cheap places that State Line Tack, Ebay and Horseloverz! (Ive attached some links)
Good Luck!
Yea, I would blanket her. I just put my horses blankets on last week.
Here are some brands that I stand behind 100%:
-Cavalier ... i love cavalier bkankets
-Weatherbeeta
-Amigo
-Rambo
-Big D
you wanna look for a blanket that is for winter conditions. water/wind proof. and durability is always important. it doesnt have to be a new blanket. you can get some excellent second hand blankets.
check around at your local tack stores and see what they have, and you want to make sure your gonna get one that fits her properly to ensure that she stays warm, and that the blanket doesn't rub her.

Also think about how heavy of a blanket that you want her to have.
I also really like blankets that have a half hood attached
I would blanket this horse. I like the turnout blankets that Schneiders makes. Www.sstack.com They have every size imaginable, several different weights of blankets for different climates, reasonable prices, great quality, and if you buy one of their blankets that comes with a warranty, I know from personal experience that they will repair or replace the blanket if it gets torn, even if your horse stomps it to pieces! I highly recommend Schneiders .
If she hasn't grown much coat then you should be rugging her. Look for something with gussets at the shoulder, it should fit well when you try it on, new or used is fine but if buying used have it properly washed before using and make sure it has good buckles and no tears - Ebay is a really good place to get cheap new rugs. Probably around a 250 or 300g filling depending on how cold it gets with you. I use 360g for clipped horses and coldest we get is-5c or so.
Do they live out at winter? I'd say get her a medium weight rug. Definetly a new one. And make sure it's a turnout rug! Ask the salesperson about sizing!

Hope it helps some bit!
Best of Luck:)
Yes! If she doesn't have her winter coat when it starts to snow, then you will definitely need to start blanketing her. You should look for what I call a light blanket and a heavy blanket. If it is not TOO cold, cover her up with the light (kinda thick, but not really) blanket. When it snows, or you have to wear two layers of clothes to go outside yourself, then give her the BOTH blankets. If it is between these, then just the heavy. Also, even if she has both blankets on, since she doesn't have her fuzzy coat yet, I would definitely suggest you get at least one heater or heat lamp for her stall.:) Hope I helped!
Here is a picture of what a light blanket should be like: http://www.smartipony.com/files/2783722/uploaded/433rsroustturnout.jpg
and a heavy one should be quilted and very warm.

I think you mean RUGS. My horse has a very fine coat and also a bit thin skinned although he is a cob! He has rugs on most of the year - progressively getting heavier as winter sets in. He is out most days but now in at night. He has a really nice Rambo rug, heavy weight and fits like a dream. If it gets really cold, like thick frost, he wears a day rug under that one. I have a variety of blankets too but NOT horsey ones!. I have taken them from home. (now obsolete due to duvets) If your 2nd horse is out, get a good strong waterproof Weatherbete with an attachable neck piece. You can get a size bigger so a smaller one will fit underneath it. You can also get "hoods" and "hoods with ears", rather like the fly mask with ears but they are warm and cosey and stretchy. Don't be afraid to get 2nd hand rugs but DO get them properly cleaned as they may carry mites and ringworm..
