Do you think the use of riding crops is wrong or inhumane?

Of course crops can be used inhumanely, people can use their hands to hit a horse in way most people would consider abuse. What bothers me about people against using crops is that they use their position on the use of crops to make themselves feel like they have a better connection with their horse. I'm guessing the people who feel this way can't perform precise tasks on their horses. Refusing to discipline and TEACH your horse isn't a better connection, the horse just starts to take advantage of you. Horses don't take it personally when you use a crop on them. It just reinforces the idea that riding is partnership and that both member have to listen to each other. So at least if you say you'd rather not use a crop, maintain an argument against them instead of dropping hints telling people you're a better rider or person
If used properly and judiciously, the use of a crop is not inhumane. Of course, we all have our own ideas of what justifies using a crop, but I think we all know overuse/inhumane use when we see it. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

It's hard to describe all of the situations in which we should use a crop, but usually when we see a video of someone beating the crap out of their horse because they refused a jump, we all agree it's abuse.
It's pretty ignorant to say that.

Duh. If the crop is being used to punish and whip the horse, then isn't it obviously wrong to use it that way?

If a rider is being responsible and using a crop to encourage the horse in a way that isn't abusive, then why would you think it would be wrong or inhumane? That's just stupid.

Try not to use such a blanket statement next time.

Instead say .. "do you think using the riding crop to beat a horse is wrong?"

that makes it more obvious that anyone with a shred of decency will say, yeah, it's wrong.

I don't get what you're trying to prove with this.
IF used properly i think there OK. However ive seen people at my barn use them horribl. Like the first time a young horse had ever been ridden he was super nervous and scared and the rider has whipping him by his facce, i wanted to cry, since ive moved barns. i dont use them just because i feel like riding is a parntership not a dictatorship so i used my legs and body languagge instead of a crop. hope this helps:)
It depends on how they are used. Remember that horses are extremely sensitive, so much so that they can feel a tiny fly land on them. With good training and teaching your horse to respond to natural cues, you can get along with little use of a crop.
no. horses are a lot stronger than we are. they can takes kicks that can cripple a human. do you think a mere crop will injure a powerful horse? it is mainly the sound. just like when lunging a horse and you use a whip and hit it on the ground. the louder the crack the faster the horse runs.
It depends on how you use it. I think it is ok as an aid (for horses that don't respond well to leg pressure a gentle tap on the shoulder to get their attention or move over is fine) but if you are using it for discipline that is wrong.
Of course not, not if used correctly. They ought not be used in a way that causes pain, rather only as a reinforcement of the leg, or a "wake up call" for a horse who is being naughty and ignoring or backtalking (such as bucking or napping).
No, I don't think it's cruel if used correctly and for the right reasons. For example if you have a horse that is dead to the leg I thnk it's kinder to give a little tap with a crop then bashing your legs as hard as possible on their sides. Hope this helps!
The crop iteself is just a tool so no it is not wrong or abusive. It is the individual wielding the crop who can be abusive if they are using the crop inhumanely. I usually always carry a crop but very seldom actually use it.
Not by themselves. If used correctly they are an effective aid. It's the person who can make it inhumane
If they are used humanly as a teaching tool and not out of anger, then yes, they are fine.
Depends on who is holding it. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

in the hands of an idiot, dangerous. Otjerwise they are a nice tool to have at times
They are not inhumane at all. Just depends on who's hands they are in.
It's all in the use. Even a soft cotton rope can be used inhumanely.
No, if used correctly it's not cruel.
