Pelleted * vs * powdered Rice Bran .....?

Pelleted * vs * powdered Rice Bran .....?
What do you use and why???

I use the pelleted because it's easier for me to feed. Because with the powdered I have two water it down to mix in the grain and a few of my horses like their grain dry so it's hard to get them to eat it. And with he pelleted all my horses will eat it easier and it's not as messy.

I vote for pelleted because it seems more palatable. One brand I get locally has an extruded method that looks sort of like dog food. When I fed powdered, I just added it to food dry like a supplement. Rice bran is NOT bad for horses, it is a fat source, not a fiber source, like wheat bran. It seems to provide "cool" energy and not make them "hot" either. When I regularly fed my gelding rice bran, his coat was so slick that water ran off of him. One should check the bag labeling for calcium/phosphorus balance, there should be about 2x as much calcium as phosphorous.

I feed powdered to one of my mares simply because my tiny-as * town doesn't offer anything else. I imagine pellets are easier to feed, but with the wetted down powder, it is easier for my old mare who is missing half her teeth, to eat it with it sticking better to her SR pellets. I don't feed to the other 'retiree' with arthritis because I have read somewhere that rice bran aggravates inflammation ... dont 'know for sure, but didn't want to take a chance. The only other reason to get powder and wet it, is if you have a horse who won't drink enough , the moisture helps keep them hydrated. Other than those 2 reasons, I'd go with pellets.

Added: Barefoot: Why are brans not good for horses? All my years with horses and no good formal nutrition training , the available information is so scattered! So I "m learning thru trial and error here! Any good links? I give this horse rice bran because she has trouble keeping weight on and beet pulp takes too long to soak (I prefer not to feed it dry) and I don't have the time before work.

Rice bran is a source of fat. Way different from wheat bran which is fiber .. Neither in moderate amounts will hurt a horse . Some studies suggest that large amounts of rice bran can raise a horse's heart rate in competition and to much wheat bran can pull away calcium. But I doubt you feed that much.If you want a yummy fat source for weight and haircoat, try corn oil. Cheap and easy to use and they love it.

Usually it's what works best for your horses' individual needs. An older horse that needs their grain wetted down could go on the powdered fine. A horse that eats their grain dry would go better on pellets. That's what I use because 5 out of my 7 horses are dry grain eaters. The 2 that aren't get their pellets wet down. Hope this helps!=)

ive always used the oil ive never seen the powder or pellets ... ill have too look into it ... we only use it in the winter and the oil tends to clump up in the cold so the others would be much easier !!!

When I do feed it - pelleted.

pelleted

Brans are not good for your horse. I do not and would not ever give my horse rice or wheat bran.
