It's a ton of work, you can't go on vacations (and even if you can find a "babysitter", you worry about them the entire time you're gone), you don't get to sleep in, you're responsible for walking them until they stop collicing or waiting up for the vet. HOWEVER - you can do whatever you want, whenever you want with your horses when you have them at home, and it is SOOOO worth it!

It's nice being able to look out the windows of your house and see your horses out in the pasture, and being able to walk a short distance to get a pony hug.

But it is a ton of work to keep the barn and fields maintained, and unless you hire someone to do stalls, etc., you're going to be the one out there at least twice a day, rain or shine, hot or cold. You're also the one who has to recognize illness and injury and know when to call the vet, etc., so your horse may have an illness or injury that would be noticed a lot faster in a boarding facility where a lot of people constantly check up on your horse. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you don't mind taking on the responsibilities it can be a rewarding experience.

It depends on a lot of different factors.
It wasn't fun for me. I MUCH preferred having my horse at a stable.

BUT, I was the only horse person in my family. I saw someone that posted above saying she grew up on a horse farm. That would be awesome! Being around horsey people all the time, getting them to help you with things.
I was all on my own haha. I had to do EVERYTHING along with school .

It just depends on you. It's a TON of work having your horse on your own property. I would always worry that it would get hurt while I was at school or colic, and no one would be there to call the vet or help him. While at a barn, there's people there all the time to see if something was wrong.

idk. Just my prerogative haha . Good luck:)

It's awesome! I grew up on horse farms and have always had them on my property except once I had to board out of town for a little while and that was horrible. I couldn't see them every day and I didn't trust anyone else to notice if one of my horses was acting funny. I will never never never board out again! I love to see them first thing in the morning, work with them , take care of the property, and see them last thing at night. Nothing beats it :-) Plus I "m there to notice if there is an injury or illness before it gets bad and can usually prevent any real problems.

Well I've had my horse at my property since I've had her and I loved every minute of it except picking up the poop:) I mean it it kind of a lot more work because your solely responsible for them. Feeding, watering, mucking, ect ... But it's nice when your having a bad day to just walk right outside your door and go talk to your best friend. Right now she's at a barn though because I'm deploying and I must say I miss her very much! I know she's in good hand and that she'll be very well taken care of, but I miss just walking outside to say hi, now i have to drive down the street, which isn ' t too bad.

Well I keep mine on a livery yard but I've always wanted my horse on my own property (well it's every little girl's dream really isn't it) the only thing I would say is that it might get lonely with no one to ride with .. personally I wouldn't mind that but I know people who probably would. My horse is called Blue, he's an 8 year old white and blue cob gelding and stands at 14.1hh:)

i wish i could say i do have a horse on my property, but i don't. it sucks. i wish i lived in the country. where the grass is down to the nub, you can smell corn, you always smell a bit of horse poop, i think it's just amazing, the country! don't you? i live in a house with less then a quarter or an acre. it sucks. but, my horses name is Honeybee, she is 9 yr/o and she is a Walkaloosa! no pictures available, sorry! pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Happy Trails!

Having them at your house is sooo much better!! Right now, i am having to board my horse while we get shelter ready for her at our new house. And it sucks. i don't get to see her everyday. I have trouble, because i always think if something is wrong ... are the people going to notice it? You know what i mean? And it's nice being able to look out and see them grazing:)

Yeah it is a lot of work. But when i feed, i usually clean their stalls out every time i feed. Then it's not a big job.

CAJUN IS MY HAPPINESS
I love my baby so much and I would never board him as I would just hate it and I'm really the only one who trusts he might feel uncomfortable being away .... Luckily and unfortunately I dont have a barn to clean out but I feel so bad my horsie doesnt have a warm stall to stay in ... Cajun is my baby even considered getting a tat of his name ..... idk anyway might b getting a yearling nxt year!!! so excited ... but me and Cajjy .. i love him
