A question for adults who work and also own horses?
Hi there!
I am curious as to what occupations/jobs all you horse owners have and how often you see your horse and manage your time?
I currently work a 9-5 job and my horse is on full livery so I am lucky that during the week he is taken care of early in the morning! I usually go to the yard straight from work and am there from 17:30 to about 19:30. On weekends I spend the best part of my day at the yard. However I am aware that come Oct/Nov the days are going to be a lot shorter ( UK) and it will be dark before I get out of work: (so I wont be able to ride him out in the evenings as I am now (other than using floodlit school).
Anyways .... .. I have not been enjoying my job of late and so looking for something else, perhaps a job that has flexible hours and allows me to see more of my horse.
So what is your occupation?
Do you work full/part time? Flexible hours?
Is your horse on livery? or perhaps full turn out?

answer: I work full time, but I'm a teacher. My hours are 7-3. During the winter, it gets dark by 5. It makes it tight, but I can still get to the barn, ride, and get back before dark (my barn doesn't have an indoor, so riding after dark is miserable in the cold, even with lights). I usually have to bring home work when I leave right at 3, or else work fast during the day, but that's okay. My horse is boarded and gets full care, so I don't have to worry about getting out there if I'm busy - he'll still be fed, turned out, blanketed, etc. Since I'm allowed to leave by 3, it's easier for me than for people who work later (even though it means I go in earlier), but I have a friend who has a 9-5 job and she still makes it out pretty often - she just has to come straight there from work and often rides after dark (with lights).
I am an engineer. (Electrical/Computer engineering).
My 7 horses are at my house (a farm) and I take care of them by myself, but I have flexible hours as I am a partner in the company.

I recommend getting the highest paying career you can, because that will fund your horses best and afford you the most flexibility.
I dont have a horse but my friend does. She's a postie so she gets the afternoon off to look after her horse. Her sister gets up early and does the morning stuff, my friend does the afternoon stuff and they ride in the evening and do shows at the weekend. Its hard work thats for sure!
I am an engineer.
I work full time, but have somewhat flexible hours.
My horse is boarded at a pasture about half an hour from the house.
And I don't get to see him enough.
Im a part time barmaid and a full time mum, my eldest is at school during the day and my little girl is in playgroup most mornings so i get up to see my horse in the mornings and generally ride out then. Hes on full livery so i know if i cant get up there then hes still going to get done. Other than that i sometimes help out a the yard.
Starting college hopefully to in january doing horse care:) so that should be good to .. im with you though i hate my job and cant wait to get another one but i need a night job with having the kids and with having my horse because i love hacking out in the morning

Occupation? Pastry chef.
Full time, semi-flexible hours. Mostly early mornings though. Hours will get more flexible after I get my Executive chef certification, but then I will hopefully start working towards becoming a Master chef so time may become even tighter.
All my horses are boarded, partial care.
My key to getting to spend time with my horses is organization and accountability. I pay someone to clean my stalls so when I am at the barn I can focus on the horses. I also work at the barn, feeding for my barn owner when she is at shows and doing some training for her. This way I can't slack off and not go to the barn, I've made myself obligated to be there. It feels like work sometimes and at times I initially don't want to go but once I get there I'm so glad I did. It's hard now and I really have to manage my schedule but I know once I get further in my profession things will get easier.
I work a very flexible 3 day week. I often work an extra day as well , depending how often I'm needed.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I work as in administrative support so I'll work extra days when the receptionist or admin manager are away or days they know they'll be really busy.
This leaves me plenty of time to get all my housework done in the mornings of my general 2 days off and my weekends and then spend the afternoons out riding or cleaning my paddock and taking care of my horses needs.
It also leaves me with time to spend with the fiance so he doesn't feel like my horse gets more attention: P
I keep my horse at my friends house so her and her kids take care of him for me when I'm at work and then on weekends and days off I can go out in the mornings if I choose to help feed, or I just help take care of them in the evenings.
