Glucosamine and cod liver oil?
I have a 21yo horse and hes been on cod liver oil for the past 3 months to help him with his stiff joints, anyway now im going to be riding alot more due to the kids going back to school they've told me to put him on glucosamine, i was just wondering can you feed glucosamine and cod liver oil together? or is it just easier to use glucosamine and does it have the same effect as cod liver oil anyway? hes not really that stiff in his joints anymore with the cod liver oil it just seems to be his muscles now but ive hardly ridden him all summer probably once maybe twice a week and now with the kids going back to school ill be riding about 4 maybe 5 times a week, i only hack him really and maybe school him twice a week for 30 minutes and we always warm up and cool down

Both me and the horse take glucosamine and cod liver oil. They are really worth doing.

Stick with the 1 and 1/2 caps of oil and go for a purpose made horse supplement of glucosamine. Gold label do a powder and a liquid, which are much more reasonably priced than cortaflex (and have the same dose size). The packet of the supplement has dosage instructions. There are lots of places online where you can find the research that backs up the use of glucosamine and I know it helps me a lot and seems to make my horse feel better. The only thing I don't like about cod liver oil is that I get the taste back afterwards. Fishy :(.
If he seems to be stiff in his muscles, it may be worth putting electrolytes in his water, as well as making sure he always has a salt lick. A general vitamin and mineral supplement could be good too.
Definitely worth a go, it works! If you need any more detailed advice, there's always your vet. Their advice should be free :).
How much cod liver oil do you feed? I'd like to try it. I have a 26 y/o TB with arthritis and he gets Legend injections (can only afford them once a year though) and daily Corta-Flex which he likes the taste of and seems to work pretty well. Can't ride him too hard, but he's sound when it's not raining. Sorry I couldn't answer it, but this is helpful to me too :-)
I helped an older woman with her 26 year old horse who was chronically lame from arthritis and all I did was ride him a few times a week slowly building up week by week and you couldn't tell he had ever been unsound. I love using cod liver oil aswell as good for the joints it is good for his coat too.
Yes, there is a powder supplement already mixed to put in the feed. it has selenium, glucosamine & cod liver oil as well as other valuable ingredients. sounds like your horse is really coming down with bad arthritis. it wouldn't hurt to have your Vet to give his a steroid shot.!

Well they sell combined glucosomine and fish oil supplements for humans. Ring up your vet and ask his advice. You won't be charged. (Well, if you are, change your vet!)

Take it easy and build up to 4-5 times a week slowly and you shouldn't have any problems. If he's finding it hard go back few "steps" and start building up again. I'd probably take a couple or three weeks to take an elderly slightly arthritic horse from working once or twice a week to 4 or 5 times but you know your horse and are the best judge of how he is going.
