Also do you clean it and how far in to this then the layer of gravel do u put the plants
It can, if it hasn't been rinsed enough to remove all the tannins in the peat. As for how far down to put it - that usually depends largely on the type of plants, though for most easy-to-keep aquarium plants, enough gravel to completely cover the peat won't hurt the plants.
