I am getting a tank that is 50gal + and I want some cool fish. They can not be agressive. Semi agressive may be okay. Just looking for some that will be cool to watch and have.
I like the idea of elephant nose fish, dwarf puffers and a tiger hillstream loach.
Thanks!
Hi there,
You already got few good ideas up there.
Just that they might not be compatible with each other.
African cichlids are a bit too aggressive to be considered Semi. One of my tanks is a 75-gallon african cichlid tank.
When you say cool, i'll try to avoid telling you peaceful community fish.
Here's my suggestion not including those that are already mentioned above:
- Clown loach, they school and they are funny (clown after all). You can hear them eating, they are always visible.
- Kuhli loach, they are really cool worm looking fish. They are rapid, and timid. But if given enough hiding space, it will show itself more. In a good environment, it will dance with the bubbles. They are very active, and will show up excited whenever you feed. You need a lot of hiding space for them, unless you have fine sand (then you'll never see them). They are schooling.

- Red-Tail shark, you can only have one in the tank. Else they will fight a lot. To me, this fish is like an air jet. Not in terms of speed, but the way it swims. Really nice black (or albino), with a cool red tail.
All of these can be mixed together with African cichlids, and that's one of my tank:

Good luck!:)
African Cichlids are great. There are quite a few different colors. They are agressive but very colorful. Go to your favorate pet store they will be able to tell you what fish will get along and what fish to stay away from. The reason why most fish are agressive is they claim more space in the tank and are very territorial. I like Oscars. They are very intelligent, colorful, aggressive. I had one last around 17 years. You can put certain other fish in with them, they are not the most aggressive. Good luck Hopefully i have been some help.
Puffers are extremely aggressive, so either have just puffers or no puffers at all. Some good stated fish are danios, white clouds, guppies, mollies, platys, swordtails and neons. Before you start your tank, search "aquarium cycling" so you can understand this process or you will likely end up disappointed with a bunch of dead fish. Please do some research and know what your doing because there is a lot more to keeping fish than most people realize when there first getting started :-)
Gouramis (cool fish) very mellow and colorful
