What to do with "unwanted" fish?

Alrighty, so a friend today offered me a 55 gallon fish tank, entire setup (filter, heater, stand, etc.), Free. He is moving in a very short time and they don't have time to sell the tank, and so he's giving it to me for free.

Only catch, it comes with fish. Two Jack Dempseys and a couple of other fish.

I am not a fan of the larger, aggressive types, and would prefer to not have the fish.

But, I am certainly not going to kill the fish so I can stock the tank the way I would want to.

Would a local fish shop take these fish?
I would take the fish to an aquatic only shop that way you are guaranteed they will get a good home

I am in the UK so all i can say is pet shops wont take large fish in but The aquatic shops i sell my angel fish fry to will they have the tanks needed and all set up some one last week gave them a 9 inch Oscar
Probably not. Pet and Aquarium shops usually don't take large aggressive fish because they take up an entire tank and customers like to watch baby fish grow, not buy adults. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

First, call all the shops. Then, post on Craigslist. If that doesn't work, you're stuck with them or you'll have to euthanize them. Best humane way is to put them in a (Large) plastic tupperware filled with water, cover it and put it in the freezer.

DO NOT put them into local waters. That is how non-native species take over US lakes and rivers, often killing or out-competing native species and ruining ecosystems.
The pet shops only take fish back if they sold them to you . you could try calling the pet stores asking if you can donate them. or you could sell them. craigslist is an easy way to sell fish, my uncle sold his fish online and it worked. or you could put up posters that you're selling fish.

hope it helps:)
A local pet shop may take them, if not put an add in the paper and see how that goes. Or if you know of someone else who has a fish tank, ask them to take the fish off of your hands. Hope this helps!
Sell them
toilet or sell them on craigs -
