im think of putting guppies and swordtails. what do i NEED besides the fish and plants?
A filter is the most important. You will also want a heater, some gravel (also aids in establishing nitrogen cycle), a thermometer, and an aquarium hood (will provide lighting and prevent too much water evaporation). Some plants would provide hiding places and will help prevent some stress for your fish by mimicking a natural habitat. You will want to look up the nitrogen cycle in aquariums, this is very important. Here is a website that explains how this cycle works
http://fins.actwin.com/mirror/begin-cycl ... If you know of anyone that has a cycled aquarium you could ask them for a bit of their used filter media. This will help you to speed up the cycle by introducing a live bacteria culture.

All you really need is a light and a filter. I would buy a bag of gravel to cover the bottom. Put the filter in place. Fill the tank with water, then put some water de-chlorinator in it wait about at least 12 hours. Then put your lid and light on and then you can put your fish in. And your ready to go. You can buy a heater but i don't use mine and my fish are just fine. Be sure not to put too many fish in the tank. Other than that, thats it. Hope this helped.

Possibly an air pump with at least one hose to an air stone .. depends on the number of fish and the water flow/bubbles created from your filter, but a single air stone would totally be adequate for your fishies.

Also, if you plan to support the offspring of the guppies, you will want to ensure you have plenty of hiding places in your tank ... so lots of plants or other decor.
