Platy with Cotton Like Growth and Fin Rot?

  Hiya,

I added 5 Platy's and 4 Bronze Corydoras on the Sunday, 2 weeks ago. I tested the aquarium for Ph - 7.6, Ammonia - 0 and Nitrate - 0ppm before I added them. By the night, I noticed that the 5 Platy's had some sort of cotton like growth on it's fins & body.

However, after several days 1 of the Platy shows distinctive fin rot on the top fin (1/4 of the fin missing with cotton like growth surrounding it) and another Platy just has cotton like growth on it's back fin and body (but no loss of fins/bruises).

I started to administer Pimafix and Melafix on Tuesday last week.

The platy with the excessive fin rot has died. I saw her yesterday the morning still alive with the top fin was totally missing and a white patch had built up around her top body around the fin rot. She died within the next 5 hours.

I've been reading around and it seem that once the fin is gone, it is normally terminal, so at least I tried I guess.

On Sunday following the dead of the Platy, I did a 30% water change and have added more Pimafix and Melafix (the usual dosages). I've also added Stress Coat +.

It's Monday, I've not added anymore Pimafix or Melafix. The carbon filters has always been in the tank, I was told that since it's an old carbon so it shouldn't be material.

I've tested all the water parameters, Ph - 7.6, Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0ppm and Nitrate - 0ppm. So overall, no problem.

One big problem! I've still got 1 more platy which has the sign of fin rot on her back fin. There also a small white patch 2mm away from her back fin. Should I continue with Pimafix or Melafix? Or should I use Interpet Anti Fungus and Fin Rot?

A lot of people have been saying that Pimafix and Melafix are only mild remedy and would not help to cure the Platy. So would I be ok adding the Interpet Anti Fungus and Fin Rot today eventhough it has only been 24 hours since I last administered Pimafix and Melafix??

Thanks for your advise in advance.

Regards,
the cotton like growth is cotton wool; a fungal disease common to goldfish and tropical fish. You can teat if by rubbing iodine on the affected area and most pet shops have treatments for it. Put the affected fish in a seperate tank or bowl so when you treat the fish nothing gets transfered to the other fish .. and i'd go with anti fungus and fin rot. hope they get better!

hope it helps:)
I always swore by Myxazin. You can give individual fish a bath treatment in a stronger solution and dose the tank with the recommended amount.
