i have a male splenden, i don't know how old he is - maybe a year or just under [long fins], i just got him from WalMart a little over a week ago. Perfectly healthy - but he hasn't made any attempt to bubble nest at all. i have him next to a female [the glass of aquariums touching] he flares his little heart out at her all day long, but no bubble nest. im not trying to breed them im just curious what his deal is. is he threatened by her, or interested???
what does it matter if you are not breeding him??? it is just a mess of sticky bubbles, what is the attraction??? not all fish do it ... you have no idea how old that fish is and may be past his prime for breeding ... and if you don't want to breed, why keep the two side by side ... stress can kill fish you know and male bettas should not flare for more than 5-10 minutes a day so just look at how stressed your poor fish is ... and from walmart, perfectly healthy, i can't stop laughing ... buying a fish from walmart is like buying a puppy from a puppy mill, WRONG ... he is not threatened, he is stressed to the point of illness ... separate the tanks already and don't worry about bubble nests when you are not even breeding ...
He probably feels like his territory is being threatened, otherwise he would have begun building a nest. I would block the tanks with a bit of aquarium background or just move the tank elsewhere. The sight of her is probably stressing him out and eventually he will become desensitized and stop flaring, but in the meantime it's stressful.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Some males build nests all the time, while others just don't.
She is stressing him more than anything. That would make him not wanna blow a nest. Does he have a heater? A heater is involved in their breeding process and it has to be turned up to encourage breeding. Move them away from each other or put paper or clothe between the aquariums so they can't see each other. Also he may not blow one without proper room of 3-5 gallons .. ..
I think animals can be asexual.
