A friend of mine mentioned that she had an algae eater that screamed when taken out of water during a tank cleaning. I searched all over Google and YouTube, but I couldn't find any information about algae eaters and screaming. Has no one else ever taken one out of its tank? Has no one else heard them scream?
Many catfish can make fairly loud sounds like grunts, groans, squeaks, clicks, etc, especially when grabbed and pulled from the water. Most algae eaters are a species of catfish (including Plecos). Do you know what type of algae eater she owned? It is entirely feasible it made some sort of protest noise. I have heard of fish of the genus Hypostomus making squeaking, whistling or "screaming" noises by expelling air out their gill slits. So they totally can! She isn't kidding.
Yes they can. It's more of a squeak.
Plecostomus actually "breathe" air via their gut, that's why you see them dart to the surface for fresh air occasionally, and also how they can survive out of water for a surprisingly long time.

I never heard of a pleco screaming and the only fish I know that makes a screeech is a talking catfish.
Actually yes I have, they make a high, flat squeaky sound sometimes when taken out of the water.
thats bizarre. maybe it's something to do with air escaping the fish .???
I took my out of the tank the other week to move in to a bigger tank,, but it did not scream lol
NO, that's absurd ..... no lungs!
