Why do i have to buy a 20 gallon tank for one SMALL goldfish?
What the hell. I honestly don't know.
You don't. Sounds like you got scammmmmeddd!
Because the size of the goldfish now does not equal the size it will grow to be as an adult. When buying fish you have to think about how big the fish will get and buy your tank based on that.
because if you buy a goldfish and put it in a big tank, it will grow larger than if it were in a smaller tank. one winter uncle put 3 goldfish in his pool and they grew to be over a foot long.
You need to buy a 20 gallon aquarium because of the ADULT size of the fish. Fancy golfish get up to 10 inches! Even in a 20 gallon, it's like you living in your bedroom. Goldies produce a lot of waste and therefore even with a 20 gallon you need twice that much filtration. Although you may think it sounds ridiculous it is not. If you don't wanna spend that kind of money, don't buy a goldfish. Anyone who tells you you can put it in a smaller aquarium is "scamming" you. I hope this helps!
1. they grow HUGE. they can outgrow 5 gallons EASILY and 10 gallons. 20 gallons is NEEDED. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
2. they produce a lot of hmm i forgot what they produce a lot of. it starts with a P :/ im too lazy to look it up but i think it's phosphorus or something like that idk. anyways they produce a lot of that and it's not good for the tank. even if you have a filter on a 5 gallo or 10 gallo or 15 gallon.
Do your research and then you will see why.

all the people saying you don't. do no know jack sh*t about owning fish.
You have to keep in mind that the goldfish you see sold in pet stores are usually very young. They will grow just like we do from babies to adult size.
Goldfish are not small. A fancy goldfish grows to be about 6-8 inches long and that measurement does not include their tail. A 20 gallon tank allows room for their growth, swimming space, and waste dilution.
Is a 20 gallon tank really so much to ask for, when this fish can live about 15 years and spend it's entire life in the tank?
Because it grows bigger. It's hard to believe but a small feeder gf can grow to 12" long. And don't underestimate ornamental goldfish either.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&…A good example of large fancy goldfish. 20gal is just the minimum for fancy goldfish. A lot of people have a policy of 50gal each, beat that.
Aquarium hobbyists are very serious about their thing. They'll hate you if you put a goldfish (or any other fish for that matter) in a bowl. Some have huge ponds and a kiddie pool in the garage for their koi over the winter. Or a 150gal aquarium for 3 rescued orandas which were all nursed to health in separate quarantine tanks. Or supply their arrowana/oscar/pufferfish/seahorse with live food every day.
I love fish, but I don't have the funds (or time) for something like that. Yet.
I rather like it that they're so serious, you can be sure that the fish are living well and are in good care. Better than many other animals in captivity / in the wild, better than probably some humans as well (thinking about world hunger).
you don't, get a fiver, or even a two or three. but you know, if you have a big tank with lots of fish, its less work
I don't think you do. I always put my goldfish in fish bowls.
YOU DONT, who is saying you do! a small goldfish needss like a 2 gallon but if it grows like in to the size of my cousins goldfish you need a 5 gallon
