planted fish tank bulbs question?

I went down to my local hardware store to buy florescent light bulbs for my planted tank. My lamp uses 40w (max). I saw a 40W bulb but it says it only uses 15W. What does that mean? The package on it said that it is a 40W, at the bottom is then says it only uses 15W (energy saver). So this wont give out 40W? really confused here.
You light fitting will be rated for a 40w incandescent lamp. The one you are looking at is a 15w flouro, and it should put out about the same amount of light as an old type 40w lamp, and will be fine in that fitting.

You can probably go with a 20 or 25w "energy saver" in that fitting, the heat produced will actually be less, and it will be MUCH better for plants than an incandescent lamp. Get one with a "daylight" colour spectrum. A higher light spectrum between 5,000 - 7,000 K is better for growing plants. The K rating is nothing to do with the heat or power of the lamp, just the colour of the light it produces.

Those daylight colour energy saver lamps are a good option for growing plants in a small tank. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
