I dont no about around you but in ft myers fl they start at 6 and go up to 8. Why are these lil fish so expensive? I would be so mad to spend that much and have the lil thing problly get stuck to the filter
quit complaining ... i have to pay for a passport, rent a car, drive across the border, sneak them back over the border ... that is going to cost me more than six or eight bucks, and if one dies i gotta do it all again: O) they are expensive because they are unique fish that are only available in certain places ... makes them sought after ... not to mention they are so fricken cute: O)
Because they are genetically modified. It's relatively easy but a pain in the *** to make a glo fish. They have to inject the embryos with the fluorescent protein. So it requires a little more man power then just breeding, raising and selling the fish. I don't know if you've seen fish eggs, but they are really tiny and they needle is something like microns across. I can't remember exactly how it's done but it's just more work so there for more expensive.
Glo-fish are genetically engineered, and the company that developed them has a patent on the artificial gene that they carry. What that means is that you can't breed and sell them without a license (and fee) from the company. It's perfectly possible to breed them, even in a home aquarium, but if you try to sell them on a commercial level expect to get your *** sued off. So the company can charge whatever people will pay for them.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com What's worse is that they are actually a Zebra danio, and should be kept in a school of 6 or more. A single one will be very stressed and nervous, and probably end up dead in the filter as you fear.

they are genetical modified, their genes have been spliced with jelly fish, and there is a patent on the process that created them. If you were to breed those glofish in your house, it would be illegal to sell them. So the inventor can charge any price they want until the patent runs out. same as the guy who invented Claratin, and the guy who invented the "snuggy"
wow 6-8 dollars. Around here you can get those little guys for about 2 - 3 dollars. Who ever is selling those are riping people off. Be the mark up can be higher and lower depending on where you are located.
Because they are a genetically modified (ie, not naturally occuring) fish.
they r geneticlly engineered
