Hello everyone:)
I have been doing research on Reef tanks and I have been wanting to start one up. I currently have a 30gal (17in deep, 34 inches wide) and I want to get started on keeping soft corals only. I may upgrade to hard corals later , however right now, my main focus is on soft corals.
My question is, if I run power compacts, how many watts per gallon, as well as color temperature (6k or 10k +) will I need? Are power compacts appropriate? Or should I use another lighting system? (I would not use MH at this moment) For the water flow, what power head would you best recommend for me to use in my 30gallon tank? Should I have more than 1?
Oh, an FYI, I plan to keep corals with low/medium light requirements. I like Zoas and green star polyps, but if you have another soft coral with low/medium light requirement, please let me know.
I do not need a lecture on the nitrogen cycle and cycling. I have experence in cycling tanks. I just need help on the lighting and water flow.

You don't want power compacts. Power compacts are better left to smaller tanks that you can't really fit a t5 fixture on. Power compacts are actually made in larger sizes but this is only because t5 lighting is new and power compacts were at one time the better choice of lighting. 10000k lighting is good. You also need blue actinics. You want this but it is a bit to wide for your tank as it will no go less than 36 " ;
http://cgi.ebay.com/36-40-T5-HO-Aquarium ... For a 30 gallon tank, You should get two powerheads of atleast 450 gph. The main reason you want two instead of one larger one is to prevent dead zones in the water.
Powercompacts work great you want 50/50 bulbs 10000k and actics coallife makes great fixtures check out dr foster and smith they have great prices for power heads I use 2 hydro koralias one at each end of the tank face one another my coral loves it
Yes you should have more than one
