I own a 30 gallon tank with 9 fish in it. I have a medium sized fish, which to my knowledge is a female. The fish has been making a "hole" (if you will) with the gravel on the bottom, revealing the bottom of the tank. She lays over the "hole", and she also gets very protective if other fish come around it. Could this fish be pregnant?
I've also seen this phenomenon; one of my fish in a tank of about 5 or 6 started digging holes in the "ground" of the tank, and it most likely is female. I could never verify the motive, but it seemed that the fish was pregnant, and on occasion I believed that I found fish eggs in the depression. She was moderately aggressive to other fish that came near. So, I would say yes, that is quite possible.
