What kind of fish can go with a male betta?

I have a male betta and I want to put another fish or a couple fish with him so what kind of fish can I put with him. I have a tank with a filtration.
Bettas kill other fish.
Do you have a tank with a heater as well? If not, then you need to get one because bettas need a heater.

If your tank is only five gallons, you can't put anything with him because he already fills the tank.

If it is ten gallons or more, you can put just about anything with a betta, as long as it doesn't nip at fins or has long flowing fins.

Zebra danios, when kept in a proper school and in a large enough tank will do fine with a betta. If they are kept in a five gallon or less with him, and have less than 6 companions, they will rip him to shreds.

No tiger barbs, they are nippy.

And, of course, no guppies. They are too easily mistaken as another male betta.
Normally any other community fish will be fine as long as it doent have long fins ... just NOT another betta. People that say that a betta will kill any other fish don't know what they are talking about and really shouldn't answer a question if they have no clue. Just make sure they are not agressive/semi-agressive fish but community fish and make sure they have enough space and you will be fine.
@ Sgt. Fletcher you are right. they kill other fish. Male betta fish are the most aggressive fish. they are called in china "chinese fighting fish" because they used them and some places still do for fighting male againse male much like rooster fighting. its really sad. when a male betta is around another male you can see it puff up tremendously and when it does that its sufficating itself and it will die in no time cuz it wont breath till you take out the other male fish. if it sees its reflection it doesnt know the difference between reflection and another male so it also puffs up so be careful to keep it from a glass wall or dont put picture frames in front or next to it that might make it see reflection shine off its tank. they can i believe go with females but check on that. and be careful to put it in a good sized bowl or tank they like to be alone! thye need a plant cuz they swim up next to the plant and blow bubble rings all around the plant and then they stay there and shove their face in the bubbles and dont move for a long time. this is a sign they are happy and they appear dead when they do this but they are not so do not freak if you see this. and dont stick your face in their face usually cuz you agrovate them that way and they puff up and sufficate and you kill your dear fish that way! they need a plastic cover with hold in center big enough to stick the plant in and into the bowl cuz they jump outta the bowl alot of times. i grew up being told no puppies but i could have a betta. so i was excellent at them. and many times they jumped up and out and one almost gotten eaten by my dog when i was older. so be careful. if in tank get lid for tank trust me not fun when he disappears.

Betta Fish are also called Siamese fighting Fish. They are very agresive expecially males. Read up on them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siamese_fighting_fish
We need to know how many gallons. A 5 gallon is stocked with 1 Betta. You would need a 10 gallon at least to add more fish. Even then a 10 gallon don't have much options ...

@ Ignorant people: SOME Betta's kill other fish. Some male are peaceful and do great with ANY fish that is not a fin nipper, too big, or aggressive. In a community aquarium they are fine 85% of the time. Some may attack or kill male Guppies out of aggression, but they have a good reason ...
