I have a 30 gallon tank with about 15 guppies and 3 cherry shrimp. It is equipped with a filter and a heater. I keep it clean and all of my water test come out normal. Recently my tank starts to get a little cloudy and then eventually I notice an orange/brown/rust color tint to everything. It's on my rocks, glass, my plants, my filter ... everything. It doesn't get thick or anything but it is a noticeable film. I do not understand because it was just a week or two ago that I thoroughly cleaned my tank. I also tried to change the filter to see if that would work and it did not. It is very bothersome because I like having a clean good looking tank. My adult fish do not seem stressed from it, but I do have a container of baby guppies and I have had an increase in deaths with them ... and I am wondering if it is from this orange stuff. I was just curious if anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this and/or how to fix it ?!?!!!
What do you mean by thoroughly cleaning the tank. Do you take out everything and clean them, or do you just wipe the glass with a sponge when you do the weekly 20 percent water changes? If you are doing the first one, then it is because your tank isn't cycled. You must always cycle the tank and only wipe the glass with a sponge to get rid of the algae when doing 20 percent water changes. Cycle the tank immediately or use a filter from a mature tank to introduce the bacteria.

If you have sand as your gravel, then you just have brown algae. These diatoms feed on silica in the sand. But when the silica runs out after a few weeks (depending on tank size and amount of sand), the diatoms will starve and die out and never return, unless if you add new sand. There are fish and snails out there that eat diatoms, such as malaysian trumpet snails, otocinclus and maybe some algae eating shrimp.
well usually algea isnt harmful. im not 100 % sure but from the sounds of things you have done a pretty good job looking for the cause. i agree that perhaps cleaning too throroughly is a possible cause though.
i am not sure but maybe because of the food
