Sorry, but that tank is way too small for even one comet, no wonder it stinks. Take the goldfish back or give them away to someone with a huge tank or pond. Wash it out and get a betta , that is pretty much the only fish suitable for that tank, it's only just over 2 gallons.
Even a pair of fancy goldfish need 30 gallons, heavily filtered. Comets get much larger, they're really more suited to a pond. With proper care, they should live 20 years or more, it's because so many people have kept them in too small of containers without filtration that they have gotten the reputation of being short-lived.
You never cycled the tank, so there isn't any nitrification bacteria or decomposing bacteria to keep the water clean and not toxic. You also need at least 30 gallons for larger goldfish like comet goldfish.

Research online immediately about how to cycle a tank. Use fishless cycling. Or you could get a filter from a mature, cycled tank.
Get a good filter to filter the water. I find that a large external filter is best for messy fish like gold fish. Also, feed the fish less to keep the water clean and to not overfeed the fish.
That smell is ammonia . this is dangerous to your fish. do 25-50% water changes daily to reduce the ammonia until the tank cycles. after 1-2 weeks the smell and ammonia will go away once bacteria develops to control it. other than that, you need atleast a 30 g tank for gold fish.
you need two things, a filter/pump and a thing to put bubbles in the water ... plus goldfish are pretty dirty fish, try getting some small bottom feeders that will help clean up some of the issues, also ask the person at the pet store what they use to clean up the water.
there are the plastic vamuum things you buy that you go along the bottom of the gravel and it sucks up the ammonia ( crap) ask the pet shop. its not nice to let them suffer if you arent looking after them properly.
