The first thing you need to know about Water Dragons (axolotl) is that if a Water Dragon is cannibalistic; this is learned and remembered behavior and that Water Dragon will be cannibalistic for the rest of its life. (This is why at Buy Axolotls. com we separate all our Water Dragons at birth so that they never learn this cannibalistic behavior:) You need to remove the cannibalistic Water Dragon from your tank so that it will not have contact with any other Water Dragons. Otherwise more Water Dragons will be damaged by the cannibalistic one.

It will take your Water Dragon (axolotl) and least 10 weeks to grow back the missing leg. Put your injured Water Dragon axolotl in a sick tank. A good size for a sick tank should be either 5 or 2 1/2 gallon tank. At Buy-Axolotls.com we prefer to use 2 1/2 gallon tanks because they are easy to move around. You will need to do at least three 100% water changes (3) three times a week and use a water conditioner/stress coat after every water change. By using the water conditioner/stress coat will help rebuild your Water Dragons slime coat over the wounded area and help prevent infections. You should also add a teaspoon of salt in the tank to keep the bacteria level low and will help as an antifungal solution in the sick tank. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Feed your Water Dragon (axolotl) three times per week preferably live food, if you cannot find a live food and then feed frozen blood worms. Any uneaten food needs to be removed after 24 hours. You do not need a filter in your sick tank because you will be changing water (3) three times a week.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

You're going to need to do a couple things here if you want it to heal properly and quickly.

pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

First thing, do a water change, and make sure you add plenty of water conditioner/stress coat to help rebuild a slime layer over the wounded part of the skin and muscle. Getting that covered will help prevent infection more than anything else. Even if you use a filter, do a water change every few days from now until it's healed.

Second, keep up with the filtration levels. Bacteria in the water will thrive on any open wounds, so to help make sure they don't have filthy water in to proliferate, keep it filtered or changed regularly, everyday if possible. Remove uneaten food immediately, and make sure you don't feed her for the next 48 hours, so her body can prioritize energy towards recovery. I doubt she would be willing to eat sooner than that anyway.

Finally, get some aquarium salt and add small amounts in with each water change, or if you have a filter going, add very small amounts each day. That'll help with water chemistry and keeping the bacterial levels lower. It should also stunt the growth of any fungus that might be present at the time of injury. Best of luck,
Keep the water clean and give the axolotl nutrient rich foods. The leg will regrow soon.
