Is he ill? He's fed once a day n I've had him for 3 years almost n always fed him the same n he's always been fine. My child poured a whole tub of food in yesterday morn so I changed the water ... it was really cloudy n smelt this morn so I've cleaned the small gravel and done a full water change. I know its nt good to do full water chances more thn once but my fish has been resilient to all torment n numerous water chances in the past. He's very loved!! Is he okay?
only time will tell. the ammonia spike (cloudy water caused by the excess food) should have been taken care of by the water change ....
i hope.
good luck!
ps. the ribs stiking out could be "pineapple/pinecone disease" or "bloat" or intestinal blockage (from excess food not being effectively broken down by gut flora. or worms. or nothing at all.
dont even think about treating for worms and or parasites for at least a couple weeks as the shock to tank bacteria and the fish itself will be more fatal than parasites.

even then a quick salt dip is the best method.
not that toxic cancer causing rubbish they sell in the shops.
despite what they advertise .....
again good luck.
and i hope for the fishes sake you have learnt that the kid cant be trusted to properly take care of the fish .....
I think Snail has much great advice. Also, if his ribs look like they're sticking out he could have dropsy. This may be close to pine cone disease.
I have to ask: Do you have a filter for your tank? Goldfish are in need of filters. You can buy a Whisper filter at Wal Mart and then go to Big Al's online and buy sheeted floss for much less that you can buy filters anywhere . Please consider!
If there are no signs of stress it should be okay. So long as it is swimming actively and still has a good appetite whenever you come and feed it, everything is fine.
