I've had my current betta for a year and a half. He's the best betta I've ever had, really friendly and cute. He's always lived in a 1.5 gallon tank, but I just got him a 5-gallon because I ' ve moved somewhere colder and need to get him a heater. My boyfriend thinks the tank will be too empty if he is alone in there and wants to get him some tankmates, but I wonder if it will stress him because he's never had tankmates before.
I was thinking about getting a few tetras, or ghost shrimp, along with a bottom feeder like a plecko, or maybe an african dwarf frog. My brother has a 15-gallon tank with alot of fish and he's never had trouble keeping a betta in there with tetras, platys, a frog, and a plecko.
I just want little Alphonse to be safe and happy.:)
You can add an african dwarf frog, 3 oto cats, OR 3 ghost shrimp to the 5 gallon tank. In order for them to survive put a lot of plants and small hiding places that your betta can't get into, like mini terracotta plant pots that are about the same size as a shot glass.

You CAN NOT add:
tetras (need at least 20 gallons)
platy (need at least 10 gallons)
or a pleco, not pleko, (need at least 30 gallons)
Your brother is pushing it to the limit, keeping plecos and tetras in a 15 gallon. Alphonse will be happy without any tankmates, bettas are territorial and don't get lonely, but the fish mentioned at the top are ok.
You can't add another fish in a 5 gallon tank, it would be overstocked. Plus, the fish you've mentioned can't be put into 5 gallon tanks even without the Betta.
(Tetras would require at least a 10-15 gallon, and a Pleco would need 25 + gallons, depending on the type of Pleco.)
All you can really add are snails or shrimp. But be warned that your Betta will probably eat the shrimp.
A male betta can live peacefully in a tank with Danios, Platys, Albino catfish, and Mollys. I have a tank set -up with one male betta, 2 striped Danios, 2 Platys, an Albino catfish, and a Molly currently. I've had this tank with these fish for well over a year and I've never had any problems. As long as you keep him with compatible fish and don't add another betta, you should be fine.
well first of all you cant add another betta fish because they will kill each other even if they are male and female
well if he is a boy really long flowy tale then he doesnt need tankmates he will eat them and attack them males like to be alone and it doesnt matter what you think males are aggressive to other fish you have only seen him alone so. but if it is a female (short tail) you could get a small cory catfish depending on if its a tall or long tank no if its a taller then wide one but yes if its longer than tall you will have to get wafers for cory cat but ur male will be fine alone and more than happy not to have to share the space
Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear but a 5 gallon tank is too small to add any other tankmates. Because bettas are territorial which means they will fight over territory. And a 5g tank is kinda small and tetras are schoolong fish and need to be in groups of at least 5 and 5 of them in a 5g tank would be overstocked especialy with a betta too. Yes its true people have been able to keep bettas with those fish and sometimes with other bettas but they chose the right ones because some are very peaceful and will never flare but some are so aggressive that even when you get near the tank they flare at you. And if your betta has always been alone then he is used to "owning" the entire tank and by adding another fish in there he will most likely attack it or chase it and stress the other fish out a lot.

1-2 ghost shrimp will work and they also help clean uneaten food and al other debris although your betta might flare at them at the beginning and maybe try to nip at them later on he won't do it anymore because he will notice that they are not trying to harm him.
But the only thing you can get will be 1-2 ghost shrimp or 1-2 small snails.
You could put in some snails, plecos need a bare minimum of a 20 gallon tank, so you would have to updrade. Its hard to mix bettas expecially male when they are older because they are used to being by themselves and it stresses them out. you could try mixing in 2 female guppies in your tank and after a week if they're doing okay you could add tetras, and then after another week the frog, but you would have to upgrade for frogs. in a 10 gallon you could get a dwarf clown pleco.
hope it helps:)
