I have a green spotted puffer for a pet. I know their flesh is poisonous. I was wondering, if a human where to consume a green spotted puffer, would that prove fatal, or would it just cause one to become sick? Does it also depend on the size, and thus amount of flesh consumed? I am just curious. I have no intention of eating or harming my puffer. He is my little baby and I love him very much. I'm am just overly curious.
His name is Puffles by the way and he is currently stalking a crayfish in his tank as if he thinks he is a stealthy ninja.:)
The food and the microfauna of captive life in an aquarium may reduce the chances of being poisoned by the toxic liver of a puffer fish. Japan now raises some puffer fish in captivity for the traditional cuisine of fugu and these fish have so little poison that daring people might even eat the liver. Your aquarium probably does not undergo the rigors of the Japanese method of detoxifying puffers, but the food you use and the cleanliness of the tank may either increase toxicity or decrease it.
You have to be very skilled on cutting the fish getting the meat with no nurotoxin. If consumed it could cause mild illness to death. Don't eat that poor little fish.
