I set up a tropical fish tank about 1 month ago and was wondering how often to do the water changes. The temp is where it should be and the fish are healthy. Any advice is greatly apprrecisted.
You need to do enough where your water change does not exceed 50% in one sitting and your nitrates stay below 20 ppm, ideally below 10 ppm. It is different for every system depending on the setup and stocking levels of your tank.
You need to get a test kit for nitrate.
On average, about 10-30% water change once a week is appropriate.
Depends on your tanks stocking. A lone Betta in a heavily planted 20 gallon would only need 1 water change a month, just to freshen up the water. But the same 20 gallon holding a lone fancy goldfish will need a weekly 20 - 30% water change to remove excess Nitrates from the tank.
If your tank is stocked fine (and I hope it is) a weekly 25% water change should be enough. You can use the following website:
http://www.aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor.php to get a general idea on how much water you need to change on a weekly basis. Enter your tank size and your fish stock and then see the comments it gives you on weekly water changes.
It all depends on the # of fish in your tank. If your tank is fully stocked then you should do 25-30% water changes weekly (1/4) or you can do 50% water changes every 2 weeks in case you get lazy or forget.

But 2 weeks is the max you can wait to do a water change okay because if you wait more than 2 weeks do do a water change then that's very bad for your fish and water quality.
Now if your tank is not fully stocked then you can do about 20% water changes weekly (1/5) or 40% water changes every 2 weeks.
But don't just remove the water and add new one. You have to add water conditioner to the new tap water and wait about 10 mins. Before you add it and also try to make the temp. Be the same. Like put ur finger in the main tank and see if its cold or warm then when you get the new tap water check and see if they are kind of the same.
And also use a gravel vacuum to remove debris off the gravel. And every month you should remove your filter, heater, air line, houses, plants and wash them because they get dirty and the filter can get clogged if not washed regularly. Because that's what happened to mine and I opened it and it was really dirty so you should clean every month at least.
It really depends on the size of your tank, what fish you have, and how many. My recommendation is 25-50 % a week with a well stocked tank. I would use a gravel vacuum while doing the water change.

Good Luck, and Hope this Helps.
It depends, like if your fish is in a small gallon tank with no filter, then you should clean it like, every day ... But, if you have a nice big tank with a filter, a quarter change every week is good.
15-25% once a week. Do not remove anything from out of the tank while doing a water change. Do it using a gravel vacuum
Since you didn't say the tank size I am basing this off of a tank that is 10 gallons or bigger
depends you can clean once a week but i clean it every 3 day cause i want my fish to stay healty
I've always been told to do 25% water changes once a week, and my fish tank is nice and healthy.
10% every day!
if your tank is small and loads of fish are inside then 10 % every 4-5 days
