I have a male and female betta fish in a 10 gallon tank. I recently bought a net breeder .. I read a lot of websites that said I should put them in separate clear bowls so they can look at each other and the male can show off his colors and when the female has vertical lines across her body that she is ready to lay eggs and to put them in the net breeder. Another website said to put the female in the net breeder and male outside of it .. but I got confused cause it said the male was to make a bubble nest in the net breeder. What should i really do? Should I separate them first or put them both in the net breeder and take the female out when the male puts the eggs in the nest ??? Should i keep them both outside the bubble nest or what? A lot of these websites i found confused .. Im looking for the real and more specific ways to breed bettas and more detailed.
The male will make a bubble nest where ever he likes. The net breeder only functions as the clear bowls; it protects the female from the male while giving them full view of each other. Give the male half a polystyrene cup for him to build a nest. Don't keep both of the fish in the bubble nest!
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com When I breed them, I use a clear tank divider with lots of holes for water circulation. The tank has lots of live plants and a sandy gravel. The water is rich with tannins and is soft. The temperature is at 26 degrees. The males usually build the nest among the emersed temple plant leaves. When the female is fat with eggs, show the egg spot and has vertical white stripes, I release it. I remove the female after the eggs are laid. I also, leave the male with the fry till the fry grow up. Because contrary to popular believe, bubblenest building labyrinth fish like gouramis and bettas actually protect the fry to adulthood in the wild. The males actually don't fight with each other or with the father. The father however , eats sick or deformed fry while allowing the fittest to live. This takes the culling job out of my hands.
