I have a 20g long that is currently cycling and I would like to add my * 5 platy to it, as well as 7 neon tetras and a male betta. I've read that Betta's and neon's are good tank mates. I've heard on some sites that platy can also be good tank mates. The platy are plain orange, no fancy tails or anything. Does anyone here actually have experience with keeping Betta's with either of these fish? How did it work out?
* My platy are unusually small, only about 1 and 1/4 inch. Their mom was also really small. I didn't intend on breeding but the first female I got turned out to be pregnant.
If I'm not mistaken a question like this was posted a few days ago too, you could browse and see the answers there for some information, too.
Anyway, I have kept Bettas with Neons before without any problems. I haven't kept them with Platys because I don't like Platys but I do know people who have successfully housed them together. Just try to make sure your Betta is the last addition to the tank and not the first.

Edit: I wouldn't worry if I were you because you've invested in a 20 gallon long tank. Fish splice territories horizontally, not vertically so this tank actually has more "space" than a 20 gallon tall tank. Also, Platies and Neons aren't aggressive. Even if, out of curiosity the Betta chases them, they can so easily out swim him. So there's really no danger for the other fish. In community set ups the fish you have to worry most about is usually the Betta. If other fish attack it out of stress or aggression it has nothing going for it; it swims slow, has long fins, can't turn quickly in currents, etc.
Well no, but I know that you shouldn 't keep two male bettas together in the same tank, cause they will fight to the death. They will be good thank mates. But you should consider the colors on the platies and tetras. They might assume it's their own kind cause of the color and attack it. Also consider the betta might have a chance to still attack the platies cause of their small size. depends on the betta size.
DO NOT ADD THE MALE BETTA! bettas do do well with other fish if they have room but only the females males are extremely terrotorial and will attack anything no matter wat u think trust me i have had experience with male and female bettas u can mix the other fish though you have plent of room but dont do the male betta in the tank
I have herd that Betta's do great with neon tetras. I am not sure about Platys but i think they will be fine because they aren't too fancy and the tails aren't too long. It can depend on the particular Betta, some are more aggressive than others.

You could put all of these fish together but make sure the beta doesnt have the same color as the plattys or the tetras
