Im a little down about getting a freshwater aquarium, but the costs for a saltwater tank are insane, Nevermind taking care of it ... I would be mortified if I killed 200 $ worth of fish because It takes so much maintenance. But I love the pretty fish lol!
Are there fresh water fish, that look like saltwater or are colourful? Im not a Beta fan or a Goldfish fan.
There are hundreds of freshwater tropical fish that are colourful, just pop along to your local aquarium shop and see for yourself . I have a 180L tropical aquarium with lots of different species. The website
http://www.myfishtank.net/ is a good resource it has photographs and profiles for the majority of species.
Mollies are quite colorful. You can get them just about anywhere and they come in a wide variety of solid colors and patterns.
African cichlids are also a good choice, just make sure to check out compatibility before buying. They can be temperamental when it comes to others, especially once they get older. They do need a lot of room though, they get to be a pretty good size and they need to be kept in groups so if this is a first tank, I wouldn't recommend them unless you are willing to do a crazy amount of research on them.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Barbs are another colorful fish. Can be slightly aggressive and like to be kept in groups (3 or more) but generally aren't bullies.
There are lots of different fish to choose from; gouramis, platties, swordtails ...
Just look around:)
Good luck.
There are TONS of colorful freshwater fish. Starting with easy fish, you could get guppies with their long beutiful tails, platys which comes in every color/pattern of the rainbow, mollies (brackish water), swordtails. There are schooling fish such as different kinda of tetras, minnows, barbs, danios (including neon glo fish!). There cichlids which are bright and come in so many varieties, some beng so bright that they look like saltwater fish. Really, the possibilities are endless.
Softwater freshwater fish from the Amazon are some of the most wonderful fish around. Neon Tetras, and Ram Cichlid, zebra tetras are very nice. Learn how to keep a softwater tank, and even specuise in living plants and you will be very happy with you new hobby.

There are neon-tetras, black tetras and gold tetras (I don't know if that is the right name for the gold one). They are pretty colorful. There are also gourami's. They are larger but some come in pretty colors. I would say just go to your local pet store and check out all the tropical freshwater fish. There is a variety.
All tanks have some kind of maintenance required, unless your in the business of killing fish.

No, and it sounds like you shouldn't get any fish, as I doubt you would take proper care of them and their aquarium.
