general discus questions?

i have four new discus and they arent eating much at all.theyve been in there new tank for 5 days now.i feed them flakes and beefheart.also one discus wont let the others into one corner of the tank.what can i do
Discus prefer specific water conditions, give them a double check. Live plants etc will give the water a good balance as they (as i'm sure you know) prefer softer water.
Discus will need more time to settle down . try to create a partition in your tank so that you can isolate the dominant fish and see if the fishes are eating properly or not.

you can try with different variety of food. read my article on "Feeding your aquarium fish" here

Try sinking granules. Mine love it and ate them right away while ignoring the flake! Also they love bloodworms.

You can try a garlic additive to the food as well.

Also, discus are picky about high water quality and high temperatures. You need to provide both, as well as a large tank with plenty of cover. If your temp is below 80F, that is your problem - they are cold and their metabolism has slowed . Turn the heat up to the mid 80s and you will see improvement. Be sure to have lots of filtration and surface water movement so there is high water quality and lots of available oxygen.

If the tank is large enough (at least a 120 gallon) a few more discus can help spread the aggression. They do best single, in a mated pair, or in a large group. Anything in between can often result in one overly dominant bully that constantly picks on the other fish.
put the rouge discus in a glass bowl next to the tank and feed the others first. see if they start eating and if they do the bad man will see the error of his ways.
