What kind of fish can go in there. We have had a betta fish in there, but he died. I am thinking of something else now ... tetra's or danio's were recommended to me in the pet store, but I believe danio's like to be in groups and swim too fast for a 5 gallon tank?
Any other ideas? Any other pets that are easy?
I have a small heater that can go in there, as well as a small filter.
Really, a 5 gallon is too small for much.
Tetras and Danios, as well as the Guppies and Dwarf Gouramis are poor choices. They require larger groups or more swimming space than a 5 gallon can give them, and will not live very long healthy lives.
Another betta would be good, or maybe some African dwarf frogs. A dwarf puffer would be an excellent choice as well, or you could also keep a few cherry shrimp and some snails. They are very cool:)
Be sure to read up on the nitrogen cycle, or you will have fish that continue to die. (Read this article: www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm) Your betta likely died from ammonia poisioning, caused by chemical buildup in the water . If you buy a bottle of Prime, a test kit from API (the liquid, the strips are worthless) you can keep track of your cycle. The Prime traps harmful ammonia (explained in the article) to keep your fish safe, while the good bacteria growing in your filter can still use it. If you change half your water every day until your tank is cycled, dosing with prime, your fish should be safe, and you will be on the road to a healthy fish tank.
Honestly the only fish you can keep in there is a betta. And Toyota Girl, regardless of what you CAN keep a fish in, it is still cruel to the fish. Oscars in a 30 gallon? They probably felt like they were swimming in acid. Imagine living in a jail cell your whole life! Thats what its comparable to! If you can't afford to/aren 't willing to take care of the fish properly then you just shouldn't get them. So once again, please don't try to put anything in a 5 gallon except a betta fish.
my 5 gallon i had zebra danios once, other time black molly, you can do tetras, mainly small tropical fish, like 3 or 4 of them . what they reccomend and what they need are completely different. i raised oscars in a 30 and they say no less then 55 gallon. you could even put in a puffer if you want, i did that once.
Bettas are always easy to care for. They are beautiful and are actually very active when in a bigger aquarium that is well heated.
guppy's are perfect .. or maybe a dwarf gourami
