i am starting a 55 gallon african cichlid tank and have a fx5 filter is this too much? and if so why
I run Fluval FX5 on my tanks but they are 125 gallons and 150 gallons i run a Fluval 405 on my 46 gallon tank you can never have to much filtration in a large tank. the Fluval Fx5 is up to 400 gallons but if that was me i would be looking at a Fluval 405
In my opinion and experience you can never have to much filtration for any tank (unless you have current sensitive fish, then you'll have down grade or find a way to make the returning nice and smooth.) I have a sump rated for a 300 hundred gal on my 70 gal tank and a HOB by Marineland rated for a 55 on my twenty gallon. I would say go for it as the more filtration, the happier the fish i think,
Only time you can have too much filtration is if it generates so much current that the fish have to fight against it. Even then, it can usually be reduced by fitting spray bars to the outlet to break up the water flow, or turning down the flow of the filter. A big filter running at 1/2 flow is better than a smaller filter running at max, simply because there is more filter media in the system.

It may be more filtering than is NEEDED, but that will do no harm.
