so far i have a 10 gallon tank. now what i need to do step by step until i can have fish in the tank?
1. Setup all equipment such as heater and filter, add gravel, decorations, etc. Fill with water.
2. Plug in equipment.
3. Begin cycling your aquarium. This will take several weeks at least to complete and is vital to your future fish's health. Cycling the aquarium establishes beneficial bacteria that breaks down ammonia and nitrites which are toxic to your fish. Without a proper cycle, life can not be supported within your aquarium. Here are a few good articles on cycling:

3. While your aquarium is cycling, plant your stock. 10 gallons is a difficult size to stock, as it's too small for most fish. There are several options though, many of which are listed here:
http://theaquariumwiki.com/Stocking_a_10 ... 4. Once your cycle is completed, you can begin adding fish slowly, one or two per week, depending on the kind.
5. You're done! Be sure to keep up on your aquarium maintenance, testing your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates weekly before 25% water changes.
Good luck.

1) attach the filter that came with the tank if you bought the kit if not get a filter rated for 10 to 15 gallons the more the better
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com 2) you will need a air pump, hose, and air stone rated for your tank size
3) you will need to add 10 lbs of medium substrate to the bottom of the tank (reccomended ammount)
4) maybe some plants if you want or an orniment i wont tell you what to get thats your choice
5) fill with water and run filter and air pump for about 1 week before adding fish
goldfish/bettas:
-Set up the filter, let it run for 1 hr.
-Put in the water conditioner and gravel and water. (Before the filter)
-Float the bag of fish they came in for 15 mins. Then slowly put them in
(When putting them in, DO NOT ADD THE BAG OF WATER THEY CAME IN)
Cycle the tank (establish necessary bacterial colonies that will handle fish waste).
