Hello! I got a male Betta from Wal Mart last saturday... He's very healthy, active - good eater, good color - but his right gill looks odd... It sticks out a bit [the part used in flaring] and its a little curlyish and it looks like a little bite was taken out of the rim of it ... the left gill flap is fine... what is this? it looks like a deformity or war wound. At Wal Mart, this little guy was lucky enough to actually be out of a cup and in with some GloFish. could one of them nipped him?
what do u think is the problem and is he going to be okay ????
as long as he's acting fine I wouldn't worry about it. could be a deformity or a wound as you said and it would be hard to tell without seeing. just keep an eye on it and make sure he's in a heated and filtered tank:) even if it's a wound the most you could do is add some aquairum salt.
keep a close eye on him if you see the area begin to turn white or grow bacteria put him in his own tank. also keep an eye on his fins if they begin to look torn definitely take him out because the other fish are nipping at his fins. i read that you are able to put betta's with tetras and they will be fine together but i put him in and the tetras immediately began nipping and tearing his fins and he just huddled up in a corner ... and he was only in the tank for 5 minutes. if you see any fungus or infection and get mala-fix or pima-fix and add the correct dosage to the tank that he is in to help the little guy out.
