My Open air tank, which house 2 filter, a corner filter and a HOB filter. The corner filter seems to have an oxygen output and the corner of the aquarium always got these white things like some dry water but its hard to get it off the aquarium, its sandy when i rub it. Whats that?
it is mainly a collection of hard water staining and the crap in the tank. if left unkempt you will have a hell of a time removing it.
i recently bought a 55 gallon set up from someone online and it was covered in this brownish gritty gunk. what i did was soak all of the tanks components in a 5 gallon bucket in the shower for a few days. dumping out the water and refilling it with the water running off my body when i bathed every morning gave the stuff some warm soaking time.
as far as the glass goes i can tell you a trick that works wonders! i learned it from a guy at the local hardware store when i was looking for something to clean the class on my wood burning stove.
take some white ash from a burn pit or fire place and put it in a bowl. get yourself a roll of paper towels or a few rags you can throw away. get another bowl and fill it with hot water. damp your rag in the hot water and push it into the ash. the ash will work as an abrasive to remove the hard water. it is just abrasive enough to help remove any gunky build up and not scratch the glass. you might need to work at it for a while but trust me its the best way.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com you wont need to risk filming the glass with harm full chemicals because ash is basically on a chemical level nothing. don't worry if you get some black chunks of coal in the water or tank because what do you think is in you carbon filters? activated carbon is basically compressed coal.
