Fish invented yawning.

Why humans and other mammals yawn is a mystery, but it makes perfect sense for a fish. A fish yawn reverses the direction that water flows through the gills, back flushing them and clearing out any blockage that is trapped there.

Gaping and yawning are very different. A fish has to be dead before it can gape. Rigor mortis can freeze the mouth into a wide open gape. Gaping can also happen internally in muscle tissue once the fish is dead.

Fish "gape," which looks like yawning. They do this for various reasons, but being tired is not known to be one of those reasons.

(It's never really been established why people and other mammals yawn, either.)
