He is a two or three-month old, feral kitten we picked up a few weeks ago. He just got vaccinated today, but when he came back, he's been sleeping for about three or four hours. His breathing is faster than usual and he flinches every three seconds or so. It doesn't seem serious, but since he woke up, he hasn't been playing as he normally would. He's been much more quiet and less active, and it seems like he might not want to be touched. I checked some websites and most of them mentioned that a lack of physical activity was a symptom of breathing difficulty. Is my case serious?
I can't help with the breathing part ... but I know that when I had my kitten vaccinated she slept allll evening long. It started to worry me so I called the vet and asked, and they said that was normal after being at the vet and having shots.
I can't tell you for sure what you should do, but if you're worried, by all means, call the vet. Better safe than sorry and I'm sure your baby would agree. I hope he is okay.
Breathing faster than usual can be a sign of trouble, either not getting enough oxygen or in pain. Cats usually breath 20-30 times per minute. Please call your vet if concerned. It's possible he's reacting to the vaccines. It's also possible that the trip was extremely stressful and he's just recovering. But I would feel more comfortable asking the vet's opinion.
