i have a young male cat and a hamster who is around 2 and half yrs old (so pretty old for a hamster) i used to keep the hamster in my livingroom but sincw we got the cat we have been putting the hamster in my bedroom which was ok in the summer but since its now winter id like to have him back in the livingroom but the cat shows a keen intrest in him at the moment hes bieng good just lay in his bed on the other side of the room staring at the cage (should i tell him of for this) and if left alone for 5mins he will try his luck i was wondering if there is any way to discourage him from trying to eat the hamster i know its his natural instinct and id never leave them in the same room when im asleep but it would be good if i could go to the bathroom without worrying he will pounce on the cage
As you have said this is instinct. If you put the hamster in the same room then you will need to make sure the cage door is secure and the bars close enough where the cat cannot get his paws through. If you are near by there should be no problem but accidents to happen.
