I breed, and LOVE hairless Sphynx cats. I know they take some getting used to, but what is the general perception among cat lovers ..... are Sphynx adorable or scary?
I'm ashamed that my country, Canada , developed this breed. It's very cruel to specifically breed a cat without fur that has not protection from the elements and scratches from other cats. If a Sphynx escapes outdoors during the winter it most certainly will die of hypothermia. They also have to be bathed WEEKLY since they don't have fur to absorb the oils of the skin. I don't see any difference between the breeding of Sphynx's and the breeding of the godawful Munchkin. In both cases you're purposely breeding a cat with a genetic defect that is of NO benefit to the cat - only to humans.
Let me ask YOU something. Are you a breeder that started out with an altered Sphynx, showed it for several years, mentored with a breeder and then purchased a breed standard, show quality cat from Champion lines to use for breeding? And do you show YOUR cats? What registry are your cats with? Are you breeding for the love of and to better the breed or are you yet another backyard breeder that's only in it for the money?
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com edit: Swerving - people are allergic to dander - not cat hair. So with no fur between you and the dander you'd most likely react MORE to a hairless cat.
i personally think the darker ones are scary, but the white ones look cute.
they look like little aliens.
ive had 5 named ludwig, bartleby, pigwidgeon, thaddius and barnabus.
they have beautiful personalities and love to cuddle.
:) They are so sweet.
ludwig was white/pink with grey patches. (named after cat from la ink)
bartleby was pure white/pink
pigwidgeon was a light grey (named after a character in harry potter)
thaddius was a darker grey and (named after a character in a book)
barnabus was a strange blonde-ish colour. (named after character from how i met your mother)
No they're not scary! I think some of the Sphynx are pretty cute! Though I admit the conformation seems a little odd with the pot belly look LOL
They are definitely unusual looking so maybe they are scary to someone who is not used to them but judging from their increasing popularity, there are a lot of people who think they are adorable.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Edit - I didn't write a very serious reply but since it's taken that turn, I do share some of Mocha's concerns.
As far as the hairlessness it does not really seem a lot worse to me than breeding Persians with such extremely long thick coats that have to be combed pretty much daily to prevent matting, and would be a huge impediment if they escaped outside and got lost for a while, they can get to where they can hardly move. Though it's true if a Sphynx got out in a cold area, it would be at risk much sooner.
There are other breeds that I see as more problematic like the Scottish Fold because of the risk of joint problems in even cats with one copy of the fold gene.
But I'm sure you have heard the joke that in the cat fancy, mutation="new breed". And I really wonder about the wisdom of developing breeds from mutations since it seems they need to do a lot of inbreeding to start the breed. which seems a risky thing to do even if later it turns out the breed has pretty good health.which I guess generally the Sphynx does. (but as I say, I don't know what all happened on the way, like if there were certain highly inbred lines that had serious problems?)
I think you you want something everyone has but better get a hairless one. Its like the new upgraded cell phone. Everyone has one but yours will always be the center of attention . Just because of how different they look. If you like to talk about your pets like i do. this will be the one to get. (:
I'm allergic to cats, so theoretically I should like hairless cats, Yet I think they look like a wrinkled up scrotum, thus my dislike for them. I am also not a 'cat person' and do not really like cats.
I love them but husband who is also a cat person (like me) really doesn't. My son doesn't like them but my daughter is on my side and thinks they are gorgeous!
ADORABLE !!!!! the best part is you can put little sweaters and stuff on them when it is cold! they are precious!

Mocha - get your facts straight. Most people who love cats but are allergic get these cats because they ARE hypoallergenic. Also there is no need to be nasty. What is your experience? Have you ever owned one of these cats? Are you a vet or vet tech? Do you now or have you ever worked at an animal clinic?
LOVE them to bits!
Not scary at all - different yes - but once you have met them and touched them ..... you want one!!
I find any animal cute, so yes, they are cute.
They're cute
they are scary but eventually their hair should grow
I think they are both, a little scary and yet kind of cute. Go figure!
hairless cats are so pretty i like them and they arn't scary at all ..
