My family has had this little cat, literally she is small, for a long time, Id say right around 10 years. But for the past couple years we have to keep taking her to the vet almost every 3 months because a skin irritation appears on her back. She gets very itchy and wants people to scratch her instead of petting her, and they appear to be similar to scabs. It appears on her back, worse towards her tail. If it's cold she will sit outside as long as she can , and when she comes insides she lays in very specific spots. She is very friendly so when she wants pet, she goes crazy meowing and purring when you rub near her irritation, she sometimes tries to lick herself while getting rubbed and she rubs her cheeks on things (but i heard that's a gland thing) Well I've tried to give you as much detail as possible so i hope you can help. The vet said it is usually caused by wood, but we no longer use wood for our wood stove and it still shows up. Any ideas?
Hi Heather, I'm thinking it's a food allergy. Switch brands of food. Get a real good name brand. Check the label avoid soy beans in her diet or at least buy a brand that has lowest soy bean percentage.
Could it be the cat litter, we had a very similar thing happen when we changed the litter, keep the rash clean with hibiscrub and change the litter to see if it is. Read more on how we coped with our situation here http://www.thecatofthehouse.com/2010/11/my-cats-allergic-to-the-cat-litter/
Has your vet ruled out ringworm? It is a fairly common fungus found on cats, dogs, humans and other animals.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Try Yahoo web search "cat ringworm" It will show some pictures and give you a good description.of the problem. Good luck.
There are many vets in the world - I would try a second opinion.
