How do you get ticks off you and a cat and a dog?

How do you get ticks off you and a cat and a dog? answer:
This is something I created for an information board we have at work. (Note, please do NOT burn the tick off of your pet... you could burn your pet and cause a sore, which can get infected!)

"A guide to properly removing a tick from your dog...

Step 1: Get all of the supplies you will need.
- tweezers
- cotton balls
- rubbing alcohol
- a jar with a lid

Step 2: Wash your hands with soap and water. Now, dab rubbing alcohol around the area where the tick is with a cotton ball.

Step 3: Sterilize the tweezers with rubbing alcohol. Part your dog's hair so you can see the tick.

Step 4: Firmly grasp the tick with the tweezers as close to the head of the tick as possible. Slowly pull the tick up and away from your dog's skin. You want to make sure the tick's head is removed, too. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Step 5: Place the tick in the jar and pour rubbing alcohol on it, just enough to cover the bottom of the jar and drown the tick. Seal the jar closed.

Step 6: Use a clean cotton ball and more rubbing alcohol to sterilize the bite location on your dog's skin. Now wash your hands. You're all done!"

It's a great idea to keep them on year-round flea and tick prevention. A lot of flea and tick preventative also have ingredients in them that will prevent your pet from getting intestinal parasites (worms) that can also be transmitted to humans and make US sick as well! Even if your pet stays inside, we as humans can bring in the eggs of fleas and worms on our clothing and shoes and not even know it!

I hope it helps!

I'm a vet tech, and we see a lot of ticks on pets that we have to remove.
Depending on your cat, this can be a two person job - one to hold and reassure the cat and another to remove the tick. To get the tick to release its grip I usually light a match and quickly blow it out. I then touch the hot tip of the match to the tick being careful not to touch the cat;s skin. Then I use a fine pointed tweezers to grasp the tick's mouth and pull it out. Once in a while I can't get it all out and the particles eventually fall out by themselves after a few days. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

I have in the past use the flea and tick collars to prevent this and they worked, but since my cat is an indoor cat and I don't want to expose him to the chemicals unnecessarily, I no longer use those treatments.
for you use a lice shampoo for your dog and cat use frontline then use a flea comb to bush them out
With the Drop medice, that you can buy at Family Dollar or Wal Mart. Or take to a Vet to get dipped.
With Frontline you can get it at Pet Smart
burn them
