How long should a cat live?

I had to put my cat to sleep a couple of days ago. He was pretty sick with chronic renal failure and was two months away from turning 17. I tried to save him three weeks earlier by leaving him at the animal hospital for 3 days so they could get him hydrated enough to recover. The vet told me he had two more months best case scenario but I decided this week that I couldn't let him suffer anymore. Can someone please tell me if 16 years 10 months is a decent age for a cat to pass away. I'm feeling extremely guilty that he didn't live a full life and that I could have done more to help him live longer.
Aahw, sweetheart, don't feel that way. Nearly 17 years is a perfectly normal age for a cat to die. People say the average age for a cats longevity is between 15-20. Now, my cats, and one in particular Alice, lived for 26 years. She had a very good life and had she been a human she would have been the Queen. It all depends on how they live. She was an out door cat having been born in a beach resort. She was grateful she lived in the countryside in a loving cottage in me and my dads company. She had many kittens and she once had 14 kittens. ut she lived on. She proudly hunted down a hare larger than herself and laid it in the garden for everyone to see.

Its like with people, some live the healthiest life eating broccoli and go jogging every day and get hit by a bus. Some drink whiskey every day and live until they are 98.

I know that she is now in heaven smoking a fat cigar in a leather chair, looking after my dad who has new friends, and cheeky ones for that.

Your friend has had a good life but couldn't stay. You did the right thing. He had to go. And he might meet dear Alice and they are probably now sharing a little whiskey ...
Yep, cats generally live longer than dogs, and 16 years is a good stretch for your kitty. Some cat breeds do live longer than others though. My cat who was originally an outside cat before I got her lived to 16 years.
Your cat had a long life! Indoor cats usually live longer than outdoor cats and the average life span of a cat is 10-15 years, 20 years max ...
A strong genetic background for longevity can't be discounted. Given proper care, nutrition , and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions or untimely accidents.

Cats that are indoors-outdoors usually don't last to the the average age because of traffic accidents, fighting with other cats, intentional acts of violence, poisoning (accidental or intentional), diseases caught from other cats, being picked up by animal control and subsequently euthanized if not claimed, and death caused by predators.

"Stray cats" AKA "feral cats" usually don't live more than a couple of years because of starvation or all of the above.

Hope this helps you're problem don't feel bad medical conditions or problems are nothing you could have helped!
